Hargeisa, (Hornpost) October 7, 2025 – The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault and physical abuse allegedly committed by members of the Somaliland Police Force against journalist Abdalle Abbaas, a reporter for Gallaydh TV, on the night of October 6th.
According to preliminary reports, the journalist was covering the opening ceremony of a new business in Hargeisa’s Tiyetra Market area when police officers violently attacked him and fired gunshots at the scene. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and Abdalle Abbaas escaped unharmed along with other civilians present.

The association has urged the Ministry of Interior and the Somaliland Police Command to immediately take legal action against the officers involved and to ensure that justice is served. SOLJA emphasized that accountability is crucial to safeguarding the dignity and security of media professionals.
Furthermore, SOLJA reiterated its call for security agencies to exercise professionalism and respect when dealing with journalists, underscoring the vital role of the media in promoting transparency, public awareness, and national development.
In conclusion, the Somaliland Journalists Association reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the rights, safety, and freedom of all journalists in Somaliland.
