Prime Minister of Somalia Welcomes Senior UK Delegation, Elevating Human Rights Cooperation.

Mogadishu, (Hornpost) – In a move highlighting Somalia’s ongoing effort to strengthen international partnerships and advance human rights, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre welcomed a distinguished delegation from the United Kingdom at his office in Mogadishu earlier today. The delegation was led by Eleanor Sanders, the UK’s Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

The visit underscored the evolving relationship between Somalia and the United Kingdom, with discussions focused on cooperative achievements and the shared commitment to upholding human rights. For Somali Americans in Minnesota, whose communities deeply value progress in their homeland, the meeting signals both international recognition and continued momentum for reform.

Progress Recognized, Milestones Celebrated:

Prime Minister Hamza used the occasion to extend heartfelt congratulations to the UK on its recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council – an important forum for promoting and protecting human rights globally. He also expressed profound gratitude for the UK’s significant role in supporting Somalia’s journey toward lifting the arms embargo, securing debt relief, and regaining a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.

“Our partnership with the United Kingdom has been instrumental in achieving milestones that define our country’s progress,” Prime Minister Hamza stated. “The support from the UK government helped us reclaim our position on the world stage and gave us the capacity to build stronger institutions at home.”

In a detailed briefing to the delegation, Prime Minister Hamza highlighted recent developments, notably the establishment of Somalia’s first-ever Independent Human Rights Commission. Endorsed by both chambers of the Somali Federal Parliament, this commission is composed of individuals selected for their experience, expertise, and unwavering commitment to human rights principles.

“We have ensured that the Commission is led by men and women of merit and vision,” Hamza said. “Their collective wisdom will be critical in guiding Somalia toward a just and inclusive society.”

UK Applauds Somalia Progress:

Ambassador Eleanor Sanders, representing the UK government, praised Somalia’s advances and commended the Prime Minister for his leadership. “The United Kingdom is proud to stand alongside Somalia as it undertakes these transformative reforms,” Sanders remarked. “We are especially encouraged by the government’s dedication to establishing independent accountability mechanisms and fostering respect for human rights among all Somalis.”

She also noted that Somalia’s progress serves as an inspiration for nations facing similar challenges and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to ongoing cooperation.

Celebrating Friendship and Shared Vision:

During the meeting, which was also attended by Somalia’s Minister for Family Affairs and Human Rights, Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Prime Minister Hamza presented Ambassador Sanders with a certificate of honor.

This gesture was meant to recognize the UK’s steadfast support and the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Minister Al-Makhzoumi added, “This is not just a diplomatic partnership – it is a collaboration of communities and people. The Somali diaspora, especially in places like Minnesota, should take pride in how their voices and advocacy contribute to our nation’s progress.”
