PRESIDENT HASSAN SHEIKH ADDRESSES THE 2ND AFRICA CLIMATE SUMMIT “Somalia Contributes Little, But Suffers Most from Climate Change”

Addis Ababa, (Hornpost) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a speech at the 2nd Africa Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa, where he underscored the importance of continental cooperation in addressing the challenges caused by climate change.

The President highlighted the measures the Somali government has taken to curb the impacts of climate change, including the submission of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to enhance environmental resilience, the launch of a nationwide greening campaign to plant 10 million trees, and the establishment of the National Climate Fund.

“Somalia has contributed very little to the causes of climate change, yet we are among the most vulnerable to its effects. The worst drought in forty years affected 7.8 million people, leading to mass displacement and economic hardships,” said the President.

President Mohamud called on the international community to strengthen cooperation in combating climate change and urged the summit to deliver tangible, impactful, continent-wide actions.
