Hargeysa (Hornpost) The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), who is currently on an official working visit to the city of Berbera, conducted an inspection tour of the Berbera International Port to assess the progress and efficiency of operations at this modern and strategically vital facility.
The President was accompanied by senior government officials, as well as regional and district leaders. During the visit, he received a comprehensive briefing from Port Manager Mr. Ali Dirie Maalin-Tacab and other officials on the port’s operational capacity, state-of-the-art equipment, and the ongoing plans to further expand and upgrade the facility.
President Cirro praised the port leadership and staff for their dedicated service to the nation, reaffirming that Berbera Port is the backbone of Somaliland’s economic growth and a central hub for regional trade.
The Berbera Port holds significant geopolitical importance, not only for Somaliland but for the wider Horn of Africa region. Its strategic location near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait—a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean—makes it an asset for global trade and security.
Recognizing this, the United States has shown a keen interest in establishing a military base at Berbera Port to enhance regional security, monitor maritime traffic, and counter threats such as piracy, terrorism, and geopolitical rivalries in the region. This interest highlights the port’s value as a strategic military and logistic hub for the U.S. and its allies.
In addition to military considerations, the United States has been deepening diplomatic and economic ties with Somaliland. Though Somaliland remains unrecognized by most countries as
a sovereign state, the increasing cooperation—symbolized by engagement at Berbera Port—signals a growing informal recognition of Somaliland’s stability and governance.
President Cirro’s visit thus represents not only a commitment to modernizing and expanding Berbera Port’s commercial capacity but also an effort to leverage the port’s strategic significance to strengthen Somaliland’s international profile and security partnerships.
As Berbera Port develops, it is poised to become a major gateway for trade and transit in the Horn of Africa, promoting economic growth for Somaliland and enhancing its role in regional and global affairs.
