Hargeisa (Horn post) Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), President of Somaliland, has hinted at “major developments” regarding the long-standing quest for international recognition, suggesting that new countries may soon move toward formally recognizing Somaliland.
Speaking on Friday after joining thousands of worshippers for Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Grand Mosque of Hargeisa in the capital Hargeisa, President Irro stopped short of naming specific states but indicated that “significant news” related to recognition could emerge soon.
Although details remain undisclosed, the remarks have fueled renewed optimism among Somalilanders, particularly as the president’s previous statements on diplomatic progress have, in some instances, materialized over time. Somaliland has been seeking international recognition since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991, maintaining its own government, currency, and security institutions.
During his Eid address, President Irro extended greetings to Somaliland citizens at home and abroad, emphasizing national unity, peace, and social cohesion. He underscored that stability remains a critical national asset that must be collectively safeguarded.
The president also called on the business community to act responsibly amid ongoing global economic and security challenges, urging them to prioritize public interest and maintain market stability.
In addition, he appealed to citizens to support communities affected by drought, highlighting the importance of solidarity and mutual assistance in overcoming current humanitarian pressures.
Concluding his remarks, President Irro reiterated his message of hope, stating that “good developments” lie ahead for Somaliland, while praying for the acceptance of worship during the holy month of Ramadan.
Background:
Somaliland’s push for recognition has gained increasing international attention in recent years, with growing engagement from regional and global partners, though no country has yet formally recognized it as a sovereign state.
