WASHINGTON, D.C. (Horn post) King Charles III of the United Kingdom delivered a historic address to the U.S. Congress on the second day of a four-day state visit to the United States, highlighting global conflicts and the importance of continued Anglo-American cooperation.
The King, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is in Washington for high-level engagements that include a ceremonial event at the White House and a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a landmark moment, Charles became only the second British monarch to address a joint session of Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech in 1991.
During his address, the King referenced global instability, including ongoing conflicts, and stressed that the challenges facing the world were too significant for any single nation to confront alone.
“Our shared values prevail,” he said, noting that while today’s global environment is “more turbulent and dangerous” than in 1991, international cooperation remains essential.
He also reflected on historical ties, recalling his grandfather King George VI’s 1939 visit to the United States during the rise of fascism, and emphasized the enduring nature of UK–U.S. relations.
“The challenges we face are too great for any one country to shoulder alone,” he said, adding that partnerships cannot rely solely on past achievements.
The King quoted British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who recently described the UK–U.S. relationship as “indispensable,” drawing strong applause from lawmakers.
The visit comes at a time of reported diplomatic tensions between the United Kingdom and the United States over the conflict involving Iran, with analysts suggesting the trip could help ease strains and strengthen ties between Prime Minister Starmer and President Trump.
