NAIROBI — (Horn post) Kenyan President William Ruto announced plans to establish a nuclear power plant capable of producing 3,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, as part of the country’s effort to diversify its energy sources and meet growing demand.
Addressing the International Conference on Nuclear Energy at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi County, President Ruto said, “We are diversifying our energy sources to include nuclear power to achieve our 10,000MW generation target, with 3,000MW coming from nuclear energy. The construction of a 2,000MW nuclear power plant in Siaya County will begin next year.”
He added that integrating nuclear energy into Kenya’s national grid will help meet the country’s increasing electricity needs while providing clean, reliable, and stable power. “It will also lower electricity costs, reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets, and strengthen energy security,” Ruto said.
Officials say the project is intended to safely and sustainably power industries, accelerate economic development, and place Kenya firmly on the path toward a first-world economy. The nuclear plant is expected to complement existing renewable and thermal energy sources, reinforcing the government’s strategy to expand affordable electricity access and support industrial growth.
While a detailed timeline for completion has yet to be released, authorities have emphasized that the project will follow international safety standards and regulations.
