Israel Unveils Expanded Security Plan Targeting Lebanon and Iran

JERUSALEM — (Horn post) Israel has announced a new strategic plan outlining expanded military and security operations focused on southern Lebanon and Iran, according to statements from senior defense officials.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said the military has developed “major operational plans” to sustain and intensify its activities in southern Lebanon, signaling a potential escalation in the region.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir described the current moment as a “historic crossroads,” emphasizing that the objective is to fundamentally reshape the regional security landscape “from Tehran to Beirut.”

The remarks follow earlier comments by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who outlined the concept of establishing a “defensive zone” in southern Lebanon. The proposal would involve Israeli forces maintaining control over significant areas of territory to counter threats from Hezbollah.

Israeli officials say the primary goal of the plan is to safeguard communities in northern Israel from cross-border attacks, particularly those attributed to Hezbollah fighters operating from southern Lebanon.

Previous operations by Israeli forces in the area have included strikes on key infrastructure, such as bridges along the Litani River, located roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of the Israel-Lebanon border.

The announcement underscores rising tensions across the region, with Israel signaling its intent to broaden the scope of its military posture amid ongoing security concerns involving both Lebanon and Iran.
