HARGEISA, Republic of Somaliland (Horn post) The Hargeisa Municipality has announced an ambitious environmental campaign to plant 40,000 trees across the capital as part of a nationwide tree-planting initiative scheduled for April 15, 2026.
The initiative is aimed at improving urban greenery, enhancing environmental sustainability and promoting Hargeisa as a cleaner and more climate-resilient city, according to city officials.
Municipal Secretary Mukhtar Mohamed Gahnug said the program is designed to support long-term urban development and strengthen the city’s response to climate change.
“We aim to build a green and beautiful city,” he said, emphasizing the municipality’s broader vision for urban environmental improvement.
He added that climate change challenges make tree planting a critical priority for the city administration. The planned 40,000 trees will be distributed across all nine districts of Hargeisa, including internally displaced persons (IDP) settlements within the capital.
“We will distribute 40,000 trees across Hargeisa city, including all nine districts and IDP communities within those areas,” he said.
The municipality also called on residents to take part in the campaign, describing public participation as essential to achieving its environmental goals. Officials said awareness campaigns are underway to encourage community involvement ahead of the planting day.
“We urge the people of Hargeisa to actively participate in the tree-planting day,” the municipal secretary said.
Authorities said residents will be provided with seedlings to plant around their homes, as part of efforts to expand urban green coverage and encourage environmental stewardship at household level.
The project is part of broader efforts by the Republic of Somaliland to address climate change impacts and improve urban living conditions through sustainable development initiatives.
