MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn post) Former Somalian Presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed on Sunday called for political dialogue, constitutional adherence and a consensus-based electoral process as tensions continue to escalate over Somalia’s political transition.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Mogadishu, Farmajo said he met with Sharif Sheikh Ahmed following recent security incidents that resulted in deaths and injuries among the former president’s security personnel. Farmajo extended his condolences to the families of those killed and wished a swift recovery to those wounded.

The two former leaders said Somalia’s political impasse can only be resolved through dialogue, mutual understanding and an electoral process agreed upon by all stakeholders.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, meanwhile, accused the federal government of using state security resources against political opponents rather than focusing on the fight against extremist groups.

“Weapons and intelligence capabilities intended to be used against terrorist enemies have instead been directed at politicians, including myself, and that is unacceptable,” Sharif said during the press conference.

The former president reiterated his call for respect for the Constitution and warned against actions that could deepen political divisions and undermine national stability.

Farmajo and Sharif emphasized that Somalia’s future depends on reaching a broad political agreement on the country’s transitional arrangements and electoral process, urging national leaders to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.

The joint appearance comes amid growing political tensions in Somalia over electoral reforms, constitutional changes and the broader direction of the country’s governance system.
