ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — (Horn post) Ethiopia has unveiled a major milestone in its national digital transformation agenda with the launch of an integrated public service platform during the “Digital for Intelligence” conference held in Addis Ababa.
The new system introduces what officials describe as Africa’s first unified digital service application, designed to consolidate government and private sector services into a single digital platform, significantly reducing the need for citizens to physically move between offices to access public services.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) said Ethiopia’s ongoing digital transformation is central to the country’s competitiveness in a rapidly changing global economy, emphasizing that technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity for national development and sovereignty.
“Technology is the main tool to remain competitive in a rapidly changing world and to secure the dignity and benefits we deserve. It is not a luxury; it is a foundation for survival and development,” the Prime Minister said.
At the conference, Ethiopia officially launched the Unified MESOB digital service application, described as a landmark innovation that brings together services from multiple institutions on a single platform.
Officials said the platform is expected to streamline public service delivery, reduce administrative delays, improve efficiency and strengthen transparency and accountability across government institutions.
Digital Transformation and Governance Reform
Government representatives highlighted that the new digital system would eliminate long-standing inefficiencies in public service delivery by enabling citizens to access essential services through a centralized digital interface.
The platform is also expected to reduce opportunities for corruption by minimizing physical interactions in service delivery processes and increasing traceability in administrative systems.
Prime Minister Abiy described the MESOB platform as critical national economic infrastructure, stating that it demonstrates Ethiopia’s ability to translate technological ambition into practical national systems.
“This milestone is a testament to what deliberate and focused investment in technology can achieve. It saves citizens time, closes corruption gaps, and strengthens institutional integrity,” he said.
He further called on government institutions, technology experts and service providers to strengthen implementation efforts and ensure the system delivers efficient and inclusive services nationwide.
Call for Regional Digital Cooperation
Abiy urged African countries to learn from Ethiopia’s experience and collaborate in advancing digital transformation across the continent, emphasizing that the success of the platform should be shared regionally.
“We must consolidate this achievement, share it with our African brothers and sisters, and move forward with determination to deliver even more,” he said.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the importance of Ethiopia’s national digital identification program, previously described as a transformative infrastructure project.
In earlier remarks, he stated that Ethiopia’s digital ID system (“Fayda”) holds national significance comparable to major infrastructure projects, underscoring its role in improving governance and service delivery.
Background: Ethiopia’s Digital Reform Drive
Ethiopia has in recent years accelerated investments in digital infrastructure, e-governance systems and technology-driven public service reforms as part of broader efforts to modernize state institutions and expand economic opportunity.
The launch of the MESOB platform marks one of the most significant steps yet in the country’s digital governance strategy, positioning Ethiopia as a growing leader in public sector digital transformation in Africa.
