Beijing (Horn post) Ethiopia and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on infrastructure development and financing, following high-level talks in Beijing.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, held discussions with AIIB President Jin Liqun aimed at expanding collaboration in priority infrastructure sectors and advancing joint development initiatives.
The meeting focused on scaling up financial support for major projects and identifying key areas where the bank can enhance its role in Ethiopia’s development agenda. Both sides explored mechanisms to increase funding for large-scale infrastructure programs critical to the country’s economic growth.
A major topic of discussion was the potential financing of the proposed Bishoftu International Airport project. Ethiopian officials highlighted the project’s strategic importance in strengthening the country’s position as a regional aviation hub and supporting long-term economic expansion.
The two sides also reviewed opportunities to boost private sector participation in infrastructure investment. Shide emphasized the bank’s role in mobilizing private capital and encouraging greater involvement of private investors in Ethiopia’s development projects.
Both Ethiopia and AIIB expressed a shared commitment to expanding sustainable infrastructure and promoting private sector-led growth, according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance.
The discussions come as Minister Ahmed Shide leads a high-level delegation on an official visit to China aimed at deepening economic and financial partnerships.
