Washington (Hornpost.com) US President Donald Trump has ordered the construction of a prison in Guantanamo Bay where he said 30,000 people will be held.

He said the US Navy base facility in Cuba, which will be different from the military prison for its high security, will be connected to “illegal criminals who pose a threat to the American people”.

Guantanamo Bay has long been used to detain immigrants, a practice that has been criticized by some human rights organizations.

Late on Wednesday, Tom Homan said the current facility would be expanded and managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He said the migrants could be taken there directly after being caught ashore by the US Coast Guard.

It is not clear how much the facility will cost and when it will be completed.

The Cuban government immediately condemned the plan, accusing the United States of torture and illegal detention of “possessed” land.

Trump’s announcement came when he signed the so-called Laken Riley Act, which requires immigrants who do not have the laws to be arrested for theft or violence crimes to be held in prison pending trial.

The bill, named after a Georgia medical nursing student who killed a Venezuelan immigrant last year, was passed by Congress last week in a legislative victory for the Trump administration.

At a signing ceremony at the White House, Trump said the new Guantanamo order directs the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to “start preparing” a facility with 30,000 beds.

“Some of them are very bad, we can’t even trust the countries to keep them, because we don’t want these immigrants to return,” he said. “So I’m going to send it to Guantanamo.
