Officials say Berbera Port is handling one of the largest livestock export operations of the Hajj season as thousands of animals depart for Saudi markets.
BERBERA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland’s Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Abdillahi Hassan Aden, led a high-level delegation on an evening inspection visit to Port of Berbera, where large-scale livestock exports linked to the Hajj season are currently underway.
The ministerial delegation was received by senior port officials, including the deputy management of Somaliland Ports, before touring export facilities and observing the ongoing shipment of live animals destined for Saudi Arabia ahead of Eid al-Adha and the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Officials accompanying the visit included Berbera Customs Manager Ahmed Abdirahman Harir, Berbera Mayor Abdishakur Cidin, Berbera Water Agency Manager Khadar Ilmi, Deputy Customs Inspection Director Abdiqani Khayre and other senior officials.
The delegation conducted an on-site assessment of livestock handling operations, customs procedures and logistical activities at the port, where thousands of animals are being prepared for export to Saudi Arabia during the peak Hajj trading period.
Speaking during the inspection, Berbera Customs Manager Ahmed Abdirahman Harir said export operations were progressing smoothly.
“The export of live animals through Berbera Port for the Hajj season is proceeding successfully. As customs authorities, we have completed all mandatory tax and customs procedures before the animals are cleared for export,” Harir said while briefing the finance minister and his delegation.
Berbera Mayor Abdishakur Cidin said the municipality had coordinated all essential services needed to support the export process.
“A large number of livestock are being exported through Berbera Port, and operations are running smoothly. As the district administration, we have provided all necessary services required for these animals before their journey to Saudi Arabia,” Cidin said.
Officials said Port of Berbera is currently handling one of the largest volumes of livestock exports to Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj season, as the final days of Arafah approach.
The export activity underscores Berbera Port’s growing role as a strategic livestock trade gateway connecting Somaliland’s pastoral economy with Gulf markets.
