Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni meets community leaders in Bosaso, commends anti-ISIS operations, and calls for unity against insecurity, piracy, and human trafficking in Bari region.
BOSASO, Somalia (Horn post) Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni on Tuesday visited the port city of Bosaso, the commercial hub of Bari region, where he held high-level talks with community leaders and praised residents for their role in combating ISIS-linked militants and maintaining regional security.
During the meeting, President Deni expressed appreciation to the people of Bari for their active participation in counterterrorism operations and broader efforts to stabilize Puntland. He described the public’s cooperation as “vital” not only to Puntland’s security but also to the wider stability of Somalia.
According to a brief statement from the Puntland presidency, the discussions focused on strengthening security coordination, accelerating regional development, and reinforcing community resilience against threats such as terrorism, piracy, and human trafficking.
Deni urged residents to remain vigilant and united against any individuals or groups seeking to destabilize Bari region and Puntland as a whole, emphasizing collective responsibility in safeguarding peace and governance.
The meeting brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including First Deputy Speaker of the Puntland House of Representatives Mohamed Baari Shire, senior government officials, presidential advisers, politicians, regional and district authorities, security commanders, religious leaders, business figures, women, youth, and civil society representatives.
Puntland authorities have in recent months intensified operations targeting ISIS-affiliated fighters, particularly in mountainous areas where militants have maintained hideouts.
Analysis: Puntland’s ISIS Conflict and U.S. Airstrike Support.
The ongoing conflict between Puntland security forces and ISIS militants, particularly in the Cal Miskaad mountain range, represents one of the most persistent counterterrorism challenges in northeastern Somalia. The rugged terrain has long provided strategic cover for insurgent groups, complicating ground operations.
Recent developments indicate that the United States has supported Puntland’s campaign through targeted airstrikes, significantly enhancing the region’s operational capacity against entrenched militant positions. U.S. involvement, typically framed within broader counterterrorism cooperation in Somalia, underscores growing international concern over ISIS expansion in the Horn of Africa.
While Puntland forces have achieved tactical gains, the conflict remains complex. Sustained success will depend on intelligence coordination, local community support, and continued pressure on militant supply and recruitment networks.
The Bosaso meeting signals an effort by Puntland leadership to consolidate public backing as military operations continue, linking internal stability with broader regional security objectives.
