Somaliland Arrests Egyptian Man Over Suspected Illegal Medical Practice

Health authorities probe credentials, legal status, and alleged unlicensed practice amid public safety concerns.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) — Somaliland authorities have arrested an Egyptian national accused of practicing medicine without a license, as regulators launch a formal investigation into his credentials and activities.

The National Health Professions Commission (NHPC) said Hesham Osama is currently in custody of law enforcement agencies and is undergoing an official inquiry after concerns emerged about his professional claims.

According to a statement, Osama had been operating in Hargeisa and presenting himself as a medical professional with dual specializations, including neurosurgery technician and dermatology—claims that triggered widespread public concern after circulating on social media.

The commission said preliminary findings indicate he was practicing without a valid license, in violation of Somaliland’s health professions regulations.

Authorities are now conducting a comprehensive investigation focusing on:

The authenticity of his academic qualifications and medical certifications

The legality of his entry and status in Somaliland

Potential breaches of national health laws and professional standards

“If the confirms violations, appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with Somaliland law,” the commission said, adding that findings will be made public once the investigation is complete.

The NHPC reaffirmed its mandate to protect public health and regulate medical professionals, warning the public and healthcare providers against employing unlicensed practitioners.

Why This Case Matters for public safety

The case highlights growing concerns over unlicensed medical practice in emerging healthcare systems.
