HARGEISA (Horn post) Former Somaliland Foreign Minister Issa Kayd Mohamoud is expected to bring significant diplomatic experience to the House of Representatives following his anticipated appointment to a vacant parliamentary seat.
Kayd, who served as foreign minister from September 2, 2021, to December 14, 2024, is widely credited with strengthening Somaliland’s ties with the United States, leveraging his long-term residence and deep understanding of U.S. policy and political systems.
During his tenure, he also played a key role in advancing relations between Somaliland and Taiwan, contributing to the development of one of Somaliland’s most significant international partnerships.
A trained medical doctor, seasoned politician, and influential academic, Kayd is regarded as a prominent figure both in his local community and across Somaliland.
Political observers say his entry into parliament could enhance legislative expertise, particularly in foreign affairs and international engagement, as Somaliland continues to pursue broader global recognition.
Kayd is expected to assume a parliamentary seat vacated by Barkhad Jama Batuun, who was recently appointed Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness.
