Maize seeds to support farmers during Gu rainy season as joint project aims to expand nationwide supply
Hargeisa (Horn post) Taiwan has donated 1,000 kilograms of agricultural seeds to Somaliland in a move aimed at strengthening food security and supporting local farmers during the ongoing Gu rainy season.
The seeds were officially handed over in the Gabiley region, a key agricultural hub, where officials from Somaliland’s Ministry of Agricultural Development received the consignment from Taiwan’s representative office through the International Cooperation and Development Fund.
According to the ministry, the seeds consist mainly of maize—locally known as “Casayda”—and are intended for immediate use by farmers as seasonal rains begin across the country.
Focus on quality and local adaptation
Authorities said the seeds underwent laboratory testing under the Ministry of Agriculture to verify germination rates and overall quality. Officials emphasized that the seeds are based on locally adapted varieties that have been preserved and further improved to suit Somaliland’s climate conditions.
The initiative is expected to enhance crop yields and improve resilience among farming communities facing rising food prices and climate-related challenges.
Pilot project to expand seed production
Following the handover, Somaliland’s Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with Taiwan, launched a pilot farm project aimed at multiplying the seeds. The long-term objective is to scale up production to meet national demand and ensure sustainable seed supply across all regions of Somaliland.
Officials said the project aligns with broader efforts to boost domestic agricultural production and reduce reliance on imported food.
Officials highlight agricultural cooperation
Several officials attended the ceremony, including senior agriculture ministry representatives and local authorities in Gabiley, alongside Taiwanese representatives.
They underscored the importance of continuing cooperation between Taiwan and Somaliland, particularly in agriculture, technology transfer and rural development.
The donation reflects deepening ties between the two sides, with Taiwan playing an increasingly active role in supporting Somaliland’s development priorities.
