HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland on Saturday convened its quarterly Maritime Security Coordination Meeting in Hargeisa, bringing together key government institutions responsible for maritime safety and security.
The meeting focused on the evolving security landscape across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with officials assessing emerging threats and reinforcing national coordination mechanisms in response to regional and global maritime developments.
Somaliland, which has more than 850 kilometers of coastline along one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, underscored its strategic importance in safeguarding international sea lanes. Participants highlighted ongoing national efforts to counter terrorism, transnational crime, and maritime smuggling networks operating in the region.
Officials noted that increasing geopolitical tensions and shifting dynamics in adjacent waters continue to pose complex challenges to maritime security and global trade flows, making enhanced coordination between agencies a priority.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to ensure the safety of maritime traffic, emphasizing adherence to international law, mutual respect, and shared security interests.
The meeting also agreed to strengthen the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) framework through improved inter-agency cooperation, expanded information-sharing systems, and more coordinated operational responses to emerging maritime threats.
It concluded with a renewed pledge to advance maritime security, promote regional stability, and contribute to international efforts aimed at protecting critical global shipping routes passing through the Horn of Africa.
