Zimbabwe and Zambia Sign Deal to Build Lion’s Den–Kafue Railway to Boost Regional Trade.

HARARE / LUSAKA (Horn post) — Zimbabwe and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to construct the Lion’s Den–Kafue railway, a major cross-border infrastructure project aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and boosting trade in Southern Africa.

The agreement was signed between the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia, paving the way for detailed planning and financing of the railway line linking Lion’s Den in Zimbabwe to Kafue in Zambia.

Officials say the proposed railway is expected to improve freight transport efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and enhance access to regional and international markets. The project is also seen as part of broader efforts to modernize transport infrastructure and support economic integration within the Southern African region.

The Lion’s Den–Kafue railway is anticipated to play a key role in facilitating mineral exports, agricultural trade, and industrial supply chains, potentially unlocking new investment opportunities along the corridor.

Authorities from both countries said the MOU marks an important milestone toward implementation, with further technical and feasibility studies expected before construction begins.
