Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn post) The chairman of the opposition KAAH party, Mahmoud Hashi Abdi, has welcomed a peace declaration issued by elders of the Issa community, describing it as a significant step toward stability in western Somaliland.
The elders announced the decision on Monday in the Geerisa area, pledging to embrace unconditional peace without attaching any preconditions. The move is seen as part of broader local efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Awdal and Selel regions.
Speaking in response, Mahmoud Hashi Abdi commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of traditional leadership in conflict resolution and community reconciliation. He noted that such grassroots efforts are critical to restoring calm and fostering long-term stability.
The KAAH chairman also called on other communities in the Awdal and Selel regions to follow suit by issuing similar peace appeals. He urged collective action to bring an end to ongoing disputes and reinforce peaceful coexistence across the region.
Observers say the involvement of elders reflects the continued influence of customary leadership structures in Somaliland, where local mediation often plays a central role in resolving conflicts.
