Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn Post) — The leadership of Somaliland’s ruling Waddani Party held high-level talks with a visiting delegation from the Liberal Party of Norway, focusing on democratic development and enhancing political participation among women and youth.
The meeting took place at the party’s headquarters in Hargeisa, where senior Waddani officials received the delegation, which was accompanied by representatives from YEEL Development Organization. The organization is implementing the WOMPOL project, an initiative aimed at strengthening political inclusion for women and young people.
Waddani Chairman Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan provided a comprehensive briefing on Somaliland’s democratic journey, highlighting the evolution of its multi-party system and the role of political actors in sustaining electoral processes.
He emphasized the party’s policy direction toward inclusive governance, noting that women and youth were central to Waddani’s political platform during the 2021 parliamentary and local council elections. According to the chairman, the party and its government have made sustained efforts to support these groups and expand their representation in elected institutions.
Hirsi also reiterated that commitments made during the party’s electoral campaign—including advancing opportunities for women and youth—remain a priority under the current administration led by the Somaliland presidency.
Discussions further addressed structural challenges limiting broader participation, with the Waddani leadership calling on stakeholders and development partners to take a more proactive approach in addressing barriers facing women in politics.
“The government is prepared to play its role fully in advancing inclusive participation,” Hirsi said, underscoring the need for coordinated efforts to achieve meaningful representation.
The engagement reflects ongoing cooperation between Somaliland political stakeholders and international partners aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusivity, and supporting sustainable political development in the region.
