London (Hornpost) Coach Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham 16 days after leading them to victory in the Europa League final.
A 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years.
However, it came to win the trophy at the end of their worst season in the Premier League, as the London club finished 17th after losing 22 of their 38 league games.
The Australian coach told fans “the third season is better than the second season” as they gathered for a victory parade to mark European victories in his second campaign.
Despite this, the 59-year-old’s time in north London ended just two years after Spurs announced he was joining Celtic on a four-year deal.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank is seen as the front-runner to replace Postecoglou. Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, Fulham manager Marco Silva, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino – who now runs the US – are among the other candidates considered.
Spurs said Postecoglou would be remembered for showing “one of the best moments of the team” as the only third manager in their history to win a European Cup.
But they added that they could not base their decision on the “sense of success” and felt that change was necessary after ‘reviews of’ shows.
Tottenham finished fifth in Postecoglou’s first season before fulfilling his promise to bring home the trophy in his second year.
