Saleban Kore Slams Somalia Defense Minister Over “Hostile Rhetoric” Toward Somaliland.
Hargeisa – (Horn Post) Former Somaliland Minister of Information and senior Kulmiye Party leader Saleban Yusuf Ali Kore has issued a strong rebuke of Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, accusing him of persistently directing hostile and inflammatory rhetoric against Somaliland.
In a statement addressing recent remarks by Fiqi, Saleban Kore said the Somali defense minister has made a habit of antagonizing Somaliland through insults and confrontational language, warning that such conduct undermines regional stability and peaceful coexistence.
“Hargeisa is home to diverse Somali communities with shared interests, borders, and social ties,” Saleban Kore said. “Yet Minister Fiqi continues, almost daily, to stand against the people of Somaliland with hostility and offensive statements.”
Saleban Kore, a prominent political figure from the Sool and Sanag regions, emphasized that Somaliland’s capital has long served as a center of coexistence for various communities, and should not be portrayed through the lens of political provocation.
He further linked the recent escalation in rhetoric from Mogadishu to Somaliland’s growing international profile, particularly following Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland.
“Since Israel recognized Somaliland, many voices from the Somali-speaking political arena have been raised in opposition,” he said, describing the reactions as driven more by frustration than by constructive political engagement.
Saleban Kore accused Somalia’s leadership of failing to come to terms with Somaliland’s political reality, noting that repeated verbal attacks would not alter Somaliland’s status or the will of its people.
He called on officials in Mogadishu to abandon what he described as divisive discourse and instead pursue a more pragmatic and respectful approach toward Somaliland, grounded in dialogue and regional stability.
The remarks reflect continuing tensions between Hargeisa and Mogadishu, which have intensified amid Somaliland’s recent diplomatic gains and renewed debate over its international recognition.
