Somali Lawmaker Resigns from Somali Parliament in Support of Historic Recognition by Israel.

Nairobi (Horn post) In a groundbreaking political move, Somali MP Osman Abokor Dubbe, a representative from Somaliland, has resigned from the Federal Parliament of Somalia, citing mounting pressure on his constituents and the recent historic recognition of Somaliland by Israel as key factors in his decision.

Speaking to the media, Dubbe explained that persistent challenges faced by the people of Somaliland, coupled with the international acknowledgment of Somaliland’s sovereignty, compelled him to step down. He revealed that in recent months, he had repeatedly raised these concerns with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, particularly regarding the hardships experienced by Somaliland citizens.

Dubbe’s resignation marks the first by a Somali parliamentarian directly triggered by the issue of Somaliland’s recognition. “For three years, I stood in the parliament and the streets of Mogadishu, trying to ease the suffering of the people of Somaliland. I was often asked if I was abandoning my seat—but today I told the authorities in Mogadishu that conscience outweighs position. I resigned from my seat, following the example of my elders in 1980. Let those who govern take note,” Dubbe said.

His departure highlights the growing political rift between Somali federal authorities and representatives from Somaliland serving in Mogadishu.

Analysts suggest that tensions have intensified as Somaliland’s international profile rises, with recognition by Israel further straining relations between the two administrations.

Observers note that the situation underscores the delicate balance Somali authorities must maintain in addressing regional grievances, especially as the push for greater autonomy in Somaliland continues to gain momentum.
