Addis Ababa — (Horn post) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President William Ruto held high-level talks in Addis Ababa, reaffirming a series of strategic agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, security, and regional integration, just days after the two countries concluded a new cross-border trade deal.
At the center of the discussions was the recently signed cross-border trade agreement, designed to facilitate the movement of goods and people, formalize local trade, and stimulate economic growth in border regions.
The agreement is expected to curb illicit trade while strengthening economic ties between communities along the Ethiopia–Kenya frontier.
Security cooperation featured prominently, with both leaders underscoring the need for enhanced border security coordination, intelligence sharing, and joint responses to transnational threats.
Abiy and Ruto emphasized that sustainable stability in the Horn of Africa must be driven by regional states themselves, reflecting a shared commitment to African-led solutions to long-standing security challenges.
The talks also covered infrastructure and connectivity, including cooperation on road networks, energy interconnection, and transport corridors intended to boost regional commerce and integration.
Officials noted that improved infrastructure remains critical to unlocking trade potential and strengthening economic resilience across the region.
Beyond bilateral interests, the meeting highlighted a broader strategic alignment between Addis Ababa and Nairobi, as both governments seek greater strategic autonomy and a more coordinated regional approach in a Horn of Africa historically shaped by external influence.
Observers view the Abiy–Ruto engagement as part of a wider recalibration of regional diplomacy, positioning Ethiopia and Kenya as key anchors of stability, economic cooperation, and political coordination in the Horn.
