Kenyan President Commissions Major Education Projects- new Yusuf Haji Girls Secondary School in Garissa County

Garissa, (Hornpost) President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. William Samoei Ruto, on Saturday presided over a series of transformative education and development launches in Masalani, Garissa County, fulfilling key commitments made to communities in the region during his election campaign.

Accompanied by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health Adan Barre duale — who hails from the Somali-inhabited northern region and councilor Yussuf Hassan — President Ruto inaugurated the new Yusuf Haji Girls Secondary School in Garissa. The institution, named in honor of the late Senator Yusuf Haji, stands as a significant investment in expanding girls’ education in the county.

During the ceremony, the President officially opened the school and handed over a brand-new school bus, a crucial asset expected to enhance mobility, academic exposure, and extracurricular development for students.

President Ruto also laid the foundation stone for Phase II of the school’s expansion, marking the start of an ambitious development plan aimed at improving learning facilities in historically under-resourced regions identified for accelerated growth.

In his remarks, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Kenya’s education ecosystem.

He noted:

“We made a deliberate decision to increase the education budget from KSh500 billion in 2022 to KSh702 billion this year to strengthen our education system. This investment has helped improve school infrastructure, enabled the hiring of 100,000 teachers, and expanded funding for our colleges and universities.”

The President emphasized that the government’s long-term goal is to empower the population through high-quality skills and equitable access to education:

“Our goal is to equip our people, our greatest resource, with the highest quality skills to build the human capital necessary to move Kenya towards first-world status, while ensuring that every child in every part of the country has the chance to acquire quality education that empowers them to thrive.”

The Garissa projects — part of the Ruto administration’s election pledges — have been widely welcomed in the region, where support for the Kenya Kwanza government was particularly strong during the last elections.

President Ruto summarized the day’s achievements, stating that he had: “Opened Yusuf Haji Girls Secondary in Masalani, Garissa County, and handed over a new bus to the school. Also laid the foundation stone for Phase II of the institution’s development.”
