Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sentenced to death in Absentia

Dhaka (Hornpost) A special court in Bangladesh has handed down a verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with her former Home Minister and the ex–police chief, finding them guilty of authorizing lethal force against protesters and failing to prevent widespread abuses.

The court read out the full list of charges, detailing the scale of the violence attributed to security forces during the crackdown.

Hasina, who was ousted from power before the unrest, has denied all allegations linked to the protests, during which the United Nations reported that hundreds of people were killed.

The demonstrations ended after Hasina fled to India, where she has been living since. The trial proceeded in her absence, with only the former police chief, Abdullah al-Mamun, appearing in court for the sentencing.
