Hargeisa – (Hornpost) The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) operating under Operation Atalanta has announced the successful release of the oil tanker HELLAS APHRODITE, which sails under the flag of Malta.
In a statement issued by Atalanta, officials confirmed that all 24 crew members aboard the vessel are safe.
“During the incident, the crew remained inside the ship’s secure area and maintained direct communication with Atalanta forces,” the statement added.
The armed group that seized the tanker reportedly abandoned the ship as soon as it came within close range of the Spanish Navy vessel ESPS VICTORIA. The warship was deployed with helicopter units, unmanned surveillance aircraft, and special forces who took part in the operation to secure the tanker.
The attack took place on the morning of 6 November, approximately 700 nautical miles off the coast of Mogadishu. Once Operation Atalanta received the distress signal, naval and air assets were immediately mobilized to carry out rapid response measures.
Maritime officials say the incident highlights the continued threat posed by suspected pirates across the Western Indian Ocean, despite years of international patrols in Somali waters.
