Washington (Hornpost) U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that the peace agreement reached in Gaza could usher in what he called “a lasting peace” in the Middle East, following what he described as a “historic breakthrough.”
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting held at the White House, President Trump declared that the war in Gaza had effectively ended, saying that the newly reached ceasefire had “laid a strong foundation for peace.”
“We ended the war in Gaza — and peace has built a very strong foundation,” Trump said. “I think it will be a lasting peace. I hope it will be a lasting peace.”
The president said the remaining hostages held in Gaza are expected to be released “on Monday or Tuesday,” though he acknowledged the process remains complex.
“They are in places you wouldn’t want to be,” he remarked, calling their expected release “a joyful day.”
Trump also announced plans to travel to Egypt in the coming days to formally sign the peace accord, explaining that the agreement had previously been negotiated on behalf of the United States but that “the official signing” would now take place in person.
“We’re heading to Egypt, where I’ll sign the agreement,” Trump said, adding that the Cabinet session would be brief as he prepares for his Middle East visit.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar told Fox News that a ceasefire would take effect “immediately” once the Israeli Cabinet approves the agreement later Thursday evening. He added that Hamas had committed to releasing all remaining hostages within 72 hours — a move he believes could “bring the war to a definitive end.”
However, the Israeli Cabinet meeting scheduled to approve the deal has been delayed until 8:00 p.m. local time, according to national broadcaster Kan. A government spokesperson said the meeting had initially been planned for 5:00 p.m. but was postponed for logistical reasons.
Further details on the ceasefire implementation and the signing ceremony in Cairo are expected in the coming days.
