Adiss ababa (Hornpost) The President of the Republic, His Excellency Ismail Omar Guelleh, took part on Monday, on the first day of two, of an African Climate Summit that opened its doors in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
The second edition of its kind, the African Climate Summit subscribed to the previous objective of offering the Continent the opportunity to increase awareness of the international community about the state of colossal damage it suffers from the prolongation of the consequences of global warming.
The aim is to provide Africa with an integrated advocacy platform to assert, for its benefit, the principle of financial compensation for contracted degradation, to the extension of greenhouse gas emitted mainly by states that are not part of its continent.
In a speech in this event, President Guelleh said that Africa must first seek to mitigate the extent of climate effects through greater adaptation of its countries to the negative transformations resulting from this phenomenon.
“Immediately, the urgency calls for an adaptation strategy in place. “This is, among others, through the restoration of degraded ecosystems, but also through investments in the social development of vulnerable communities,” said the Head of State.
President Guelleh then cited the beginning of a genuine energy transition as another major step in the gradual process to marginalize the negative climate impacts in Africa.
In this momentum, the Head of State has suggested mobilization of the funding required by the energy transition to a series of innovative initiatives.
“In order to face the hydro of global warming, we need to put in place a perennial financing mechanism,” the President of the Republic emphasized in this regard.
“It is this mechanism, without a doubt, that will be the barometer of the credibility of the International Community and, in the long run, the effectiveness of policies to combat climate change,” he highlighted.
“In order to exploit the many decentered energy potentials of our continent, we must bring renewable energy funding to at least 20% by 2030,” said President Guelleh in the same motion, relaying how much our country already has “expertise” in this precise domain.
“For the past two years, the “”Sovereign Carbon Agency” has been collecting carbon contributions based on the principle of “”polluter-payer”” and turning them into adaptation projects for communities affected by global warming.” “, thus rejoiced the President of the Republic.
In this speech, President Guelleh admits, however, that the triumph of African companies on climate-induced problems remains a burden to the perspective of their optimal access to multifaceted funds agreed to be made available on the principle of active international solidarity.
That’s why he describes the summit as “an opportunity for Africa to remind our international partners of their commitment to financing the ecological transition as a whole… such as debt relief in exchange for green investment, loss and damage compensation funds but also the climate green fund.
It should be noted that yesterday, in the evening, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Ismail Omar Guelleh, took part in an official dinner given by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, in honor of the Heads of State and Government participating in the 2nd African Climate Summit.
