The opposition party KULMIYE expresses its full solidarity with the people of Somaliland, who, for the first time in history, have demonstrated for a common cause that directly affects their livelihoods — and not in support of any politician calling them to risk their lives.
The party strongly condemns the government for its failure to address the 100% increase imposed by telecommunications companies on service fees, including calls and internet — a decision that deeply affects the daily lives of citizens and has sparked widespread public outrage.
Furthermore, KULMIYE, recognizing the hardships faced by the economically vulnerable members of Somaliland society, including the effects of inflation and ongoing droughts, criticizes the government for its inability to control the soaring prices of essential goods and fuel, which continue to rise daily.
In consideration of the people’s welfare, KULMIYE calls upon all relevant stakeholders to adhere to the following:
The government must reconsider and reverse its reckless decision announced today, considering the public’s sentiments.
Citizens must always avoid actions that could lead to harm, such as protests that result in destruction of private property or the premises of telecommunications companies. They are urged to remain cooperative with the security agencies tasked with safeguarding public safety.
Security forces warned to exercise restraint and not to use live ammunition against their own people.
Lastly, the WADDANI government has failed to keep pace with the growing challenges facing citizens’ daily lives. It is worth noting that during the 14 years when KULMIYE was in power, such a crisis never occurred. Successive KULMIYE administrations consistently worked to control inflation and the devaluation of the national currency.
