New York (Horn post) The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2809 (2025), extending the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) until 31 December 2026, while noting persistent funding shortfalls and the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
Under the resolution, the Council authorized African Union member states to maintain the deployment of up to 11,826 uniformed personnel, including 680 police officers, to support stabilization and security operations in Somalia.
The Council emphasized that sustained international support for AUSSOM, alongside the Somali Security Forces, remains crucial for consolidating gains against Al-Shabaab and enhancing overall security in Somalia and the wider region.
It also urged traditional and new donors to provide adequate and predictable funding to ensure the mission’s effectiveness.
In addition, the resolution confirmed that the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) will cease all operations on 31 October 2026, following the completion of the second phase of its transition plan.
The Council endorsed the implementation of the transition roadmap outlined in the Secretary-General’s report of 30 September, reaffirming the international community’s commitment to a coordinated and gradual transfer of responsibilities from UN to AU-led operations.
