U.S. AFRICOM Delegation Inspects Berbera Airport and Port Amid Deepening Strategic Engagement.

Berbera (Hornpost) A high-level United States delegation led by AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson and U.S. Deputy Ambassador Justin Davis conducted an extensive field visit to Berbera Airport and the Berbera International Port following their official meeting with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro) in Hargeisa.

The delegation, which included senior military officers and American diplomatic officials, arrived in the coastal city of Berbera where they were welcomed by Berbera Mayor Abdishakur Cidin, Sahil Regional Governor, the Somaliland Ports Authority Manager Ali Diriye, and other senior government officials including Minister of Aviation and Airports of the Republic of Somaliland Fuad Ahmed Nuh who accompanied the U.S. team from Hargeisa.

Berbera Port Strategic Chokepoint

According to Somaliland officials, the visit focused on assessing ongoing and potential U.S.–Somaliland security and logistical cooperation, particularly the development of Berbera as a strategic hub. The delegation toured the Berbera Airport, where construction work related to a proposed U.S. military facility is underway, and inspected the expanded Berbera Port, one of the most modern deep-sea ports in the Horn of Africa.

The inspection comes amid increasing strategic discussions between Somaliland and the United States. In recent years, the two sides have been exploring prospects for establishing a U.S. military presence in Berbera—a development Somaliland views as a pathway toward securing international recognition. Berbera’s geographic position along the Gulf of Aden and near the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint has drawn growing interest from global powers seeking stability in the Red Sea corridor.
