Trump Drops Tariff Threat Over Greenland, Calls for Urgent Talks and Signals Framework Agreement.

Davos, Switzerland (Horn post) U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled out the use of military force over Greenland, withdrawn a planned tariff threat, and called for urgent negotiations on the future status of the Arctic island, citing national security concerns and ongoing diplomatic engagement with NATO.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Trump said the United States would not use armed force to acquire Greenland but insisted that immediate talks should begin. He described potential U.S. ownership of the island as a “small request,” reiterating that Greenland is strategically vital to American security interests.

Trump also used his Davos address to criticize NATO allies, accusing several members of failing to meet their obligations, and openly mocking the leadership of France and Canada.

Shortly after the speech, President Trump announced that he would not implement the additional tariffs that had been scheduled to take effect on February 1, which were linked to the Greenland dispute. In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the decision followed a “very productive meeting” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

According to Trump, the two sides agreed on a framework for a future deal related to Greenland, which he said would benefit both the United States and all NATO member states if finalized.

“In light of this understanding, I will not proceed with the tariffs planned for February 1,” Trump said, adding that further discussions are ongoing, including talks related to the so-called “Golden Dome Project” and its connection to Greenland.

He noted that more details would be released as negotiations progress and said the talks would be led by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other officials as required, who would report directly to him.

Despite Trump’s shift in tone, Denmark and Greenland’s self-governing authorities have reiterated their opposition to any U.S. takeover of the island. Several U.S. allies have also rejected Washington’s claims over Greenland, underscoring continued diplomatic sensitivity around the issue.
