Somaliland Welcomes UN Acknowledgment of 1988 Atrocities, Condemns Somalia’s Denial

Somaliland Thanks Israel and US for Upholding Historical Truth at the UN.

Hargeisa (Horn Post) The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has welcomed remarks delivered at the United Nations that explicitly acknowledged the atrocities committed against the people of Somaliland in 1988, describing the statements as a significant affirmation of historical truth and justice.

In a statement issued from Hargeisa, the government praised the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations for recognizing the mass killings and human rights violations carried out by the former Somali regime. Somaliland also commended the United States’ Deputy Representative to the UN for her remarks highlighting Somaliland’s standing and responsible role within the international community.

At the same time, the Somaliland government strongly condemned the Somali representative’s denial of the 1988 crimes, which it said are well documented and internationally recognized as crimes against humanity. Officials described the denial as an attempt to distort history and undermine the suffering endured by the people of Somaliland.

The statement reaffirmed that Somaliland’s statehood is anchored in historical legality, effective governance, a defined territory, and the freely expressed will of its people. Somaliland was first recognized as an independent state in 1960 and restored its sovereignty in 1991, following the collapse of the union with Somalia.

Over the past three decades, Somaliland has maintained peace, stability, and democratic governance in a volatile region, positioning itself as a reliable partner committed to security, democratic values, and regional cooperation. The government reiterated its call on the international community to acknowledge these realities and engage Somaliland accordingly.
