Hargeisa, (Horn Post) Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has convened a high-level national consultation aimed at ending ongoing clashes in western Somaliland, particularly in the regions of Awdal and Selel.
The meeting, attended by the Vice President, speakers of both chambers of parliament, senior members of the House of Elders (Guurti) and House of Representatives, cabinet ministers, and the National Peace Committee, focused on establishing a coordinated strategy to de-escalate violence and restore stability.
Officials described the gathering as a unified national effort marked by consensus on urgent and decisive measures to contain the conflict and prevent further loss of life.
Coordinated National Response
President Irro emphasized the immediate need to halt hostilities and protect civilians, calling for the launch of a comprehensive national response involving all branches of government, security forces, traditional leaders, and community elders.
He also underscored the importance of strengthening dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms, combining formal legal frameworks with Somaliland’s customary dispute-resolution practices.
“The priority is to stop the violence swiftly and safeguard the lives of our citizens,” the president said, according to a statement released after the meeting.
Strengthening Security and Dialogue
Authorities agreed to reinforce security measures across Awdal and Selel to prevent the conflict from spreading further. Participants also reiterated the need to intensify peace negotiations and reconciliation efforts at both local and national levels.
Leaders from both legislative houses, cabinet officials, and members of the National Peace Committee welcomed the president’s initiative, pledging full support for efforts to end the clashes and restore calm.
Role of Traditional Leaders
In a parallel session with senior elders, the president stressed the critical role of unity and community cohesion in achieving a sustainable resolution. Traditional leaders, widely regarded as key mediators in Somaliland’s peace-building processes, committed to playing an active role in facilitating dialogue and implementing long-term peace agreements.
The developments highlight Somaliland’s reliance on a hybrid governance model that integrates state institutions and traditional authority structures in addressing internal conflicts.
