Hargeisa, Somaliland – (Hornpost) The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the local organization Somaliland Y-PEER, has handed over start-up kits to 33 young men and women who recently completed a three-month vocational training program aimed at promoting youth entrepreneurship.
The graduation and handover ceremony, held at the Y-PEER headquarters in Hargeisa, marked the conclusion of a competition where young participants presented business ideas after acquiring various technical and vocational skills. The initiative provided the winners with essential equipment to launch small businesses in sectors such as tailoring, beauty and cosmetics, electrical work, and multimedia production.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Abdilaahi Mohamed Mohamoud Jidhe, Director General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, praised the initiative and underscored the importance of empowering young people through skills training and self-employment opportunities.
The program forms part of the “Mustaqbaldoon” (Future Seekers) project, jointly implemented by Somaliland Y-PEER and Deaconess Foundation, with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland. The project also receives technical assistance from the Ministries of Employment and Social Affairs, Youth and Sports, and Education and Science.
During the ceremony, remarks were also delivered by Samira Mohamed Ahmed, a Y-PEER staff member, and Mohamed Mahad Dhamac, the Executive Director of Y-PEER, who both elaborated on the project’s objectives and impact.
Other speakers included Omar Hussein Mire, Advisor to the Minister of Youth and Sports; representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science; Abdirahman Adan Ahmed, Director of Youth Employment at the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs; and Juweria Abdirahman, speaking on behalf of the beneficiary youth.
All speakers encouraged the young entrepreneurs to utilize the tools provided to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to reducing youth unemployment in Somaliland.
