Somaliland coast guards Strengthens Operations to Protect Marine Resources.

Sallel, Somaliland – October 11, 2025 (Hornpost) The Somaliland Coast Guard in the Sallel region has intensified its efforts to combat illegal fishing, apprehending about 30 fishing vessels and nearly 40 individuals who were found engaging in unlawful fishing activities along the country’s western coast.

This operation highlights Somaliland’s growing commitment to safeguarding its natural resources, particularly marine wealth, from illegal and unregulated exploitation.

The country’s coastline is home to abundant fish species and other valuable marine resources which, if properly managed, could serve as a cornerstone of the national economy and a sustainable livelihood for coastal communities.

Illegal fishing by unauthorized and sometimes foreign vessels, however, continues to pose a serious threat to the sustainability of these resources.

The latest operation demonstrates the increasing effectiveness and readiness of the Somaliland Coast Guard, showcasing its capability to enforce maritime laws and protect national interests at sea.

Government support has been instrumental in this progress. Through continued investment in modern equipment, specialized training, and logistical assistance, Somaliland has strengthened the capacity of its maritime security institutions, enabling them to perform their duties with greater precision and efficiency.

The successful operation sends a clear message that Somaliland is firmly committed to protecting its territorial waters and marine environment.

The government remains determined to prevent any form of illegal exploitation and to ensure that maritime security remains a top national priority.

This achievement also emphasizes the importance of inter-agency coordination, technical advancement, and sustained monitoring to preserve marine resources for future generations.

Protecting Somaliland’s seas and coastal ecosystems is not only a duty of the security forces but a collective national responsibility that requires continued support and cooperation.
