HARGEISA (Horn post) The Commander of the Somaliland Coast Guard has officially concluded an advanced international training program for a group of Coast Guard officers, aimed at strengthening maritime security capabilities and improving coordination in the region.
The training program, which lasted for an extended period, was supported by IORIS, an international maritime coordination platform that promotes cooperation and information sharing among maritime security agencies across the Indian Ocean region.
According to officials, the training focused on enhancing the professional skills of Coast Guard officers in key areas including maritime surveillance, information sharing, operational coordination, and responding to maritime threats such as illegal fishing, smuggling, and piracy.
During the closing ceremony, the Commander of the Somaliland Coast Guard commended the participating officers for successfully completing the intensive program and emphasized the importance of continuous training to strengthen the country’s maritime security institutions.
He also highlighted the significance of international partnerships in building the capacity of Somaliland’s maritime forces, noting that cooperation with global and regional partners plays a vital role in safeguarding the country’s coastal waters and maritime resources.
The training initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize and professionalize the Somaliland Coast Guard, which is responsible for protecting the country’s extensive coastline along the Gulf of Aden and ensuring maritime safety.
Officials said the newly trained officers are expected to play an important role in improving operational efficiency, coordination with international maritime partners, and protecting Somaliland’s territorial waters.
