Somaliland and Somalia Were Separate States Before 1960 Union as US Advisor Confirms Historical Status.

Las Anod Visit Sparks Security Concerns Amid International Recognition Debate.

Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn post) The security and political situation in eastern Somaliland has escalated following a controversial visit by senior officials of the Federal Government of Somalia to Las Anod. The visit, described by Somaliland authorities as a provocative act, has raised concerns over potential armed clashes and further destabilization of the region.

Las Anod, a strategically sensitive city in eastern Somaliland, has become the focal point of rising tensions between Somaliland and Somalia. Analysts warn that the presence of Somali federal officials in the city, possibly supported by external actors opposed to Somaliland’s international recognition, increases the risk of localized conflict and regional instability.

Amid these tensions, Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to former US President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs, highlighted Somaliland’s historical status in a recent interview with Al-Arabiya TV. Boulos confirmed that Somaliland and Somalia were separate entities in 1960, and that Somaliland voluntarily chose to unite with Somalia at that time.

“This historical fact is crucial for policymakers and observers,” Boulos said, emphasizing the voluntary nature of the 1960 union. His remarks are seen as significant by international observers in the context of Somaliland’s ongoing pursuit of formal recognition.

President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) has repeatedly warned that Somaliland will defend its territory and sovereignty while calling for international awareness and restraint. Hargeisa insists that any engagement must respect Somaliland’s de facto statehood and the will of its people, particularly in light of the city of Las Anod being used as a flashpoint.

The combined dynamics of on-the-ground security risks and growing international acknowledgment of Somaliland’s historical status have intensified the debate over its sovereignty and recognition. Observers note that statements like Boulos’ could reinforce Somaliland’s position in diplomatic forums and strengthen arguments for international recognition.
