Mogadishu (Hornpost) The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has spoken eloquently about the changes and progress made in the peace process in Mogadishu. Speaking about the country’s situation, he said, “After 35 years of difficult circumstances, what was being told to the people yesterday cannot be told to the people today.” This statement reflects a new confidence and vision that is appropriate for the development of Somali society.
Mr. Hassan Sheikh clearly affirmed that Somalia is going through a historic moment, using the opportunities of peace to achieve tangible change. Mogadishu, which has long been plagued by conflict and security challenges, appears to have recovered. These developments include social reconciliation, reducing security violations, and ensuring that the Somali people listen to the leadership of the government.
Despite the President’s statement of progress, there are still many challenges, including the controversial electoral plan. Opposition politicians and some regional governments, particularly in Puntland and Jubaland, are opposed to the one-person, one-vote election plan. They argue that the security situation does not support this electoral system, raising questions about the possibility of holding a fair election currently.
The regional governments of Puntland and Jubaland, which have a long history of opposing the central government, are expressing concerns about the security situation in the country. This makes the debate on the electoral process difficult; as the security architecture, which always needs to be considered, means that fair elections are not achievable without implementing the necessary reforms.
On the other hand, the Somali people are very interested in elections; their main interest is to have a fair system and leadership that is in line with their preferences. If peace is achieved, it could lead to new and fair leadership, which could help the country rebuild public trust and public institutions.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud needs to work on agreements, consultations, and partnerships with the various political parties in Somalia to build the country’s future. Dialogue between the government and the regional administrations is essential to create an environment of security and trust, address the needs of the people, and achieve credible elections.
Partnership and dialogue are key to peace and development in Somalia, and working to resolve political differences may lead to real change in the country’s political system. This development requires further support and analysis to bring together all stakeholders in Somalia.
