Shocking Killings Reported in Walla-Weyn, Lower Shabelle of Somalia

Walla-Weyn, Lower Shabelle— (Hornpost) Residents of Walla-Weyn town in southern Somalia have reported a wave of horrific violence linked to a renewed clan dispute, with videos circulating online showing people being burned alive and homes set on fire while families remained inside. The footage has triggered widespread anger and disbelief among Somalis, who say the brutality goes far beyond previous inter-clan clashes.

According to local sources, the attacks occurred over the past 48 hours, during which several civilians, including women and children, were allegedly killed in arson attacks on their homes. Community elders say the violence stems from a dispute between two clan groups, but the scale and method of the killings have shocked the public.

Many Somalis on social media and civil society groups say the incidents violate a long-standing cultural and religious principle known as “birmageydada” — the traditional rule prohibiting the killing of women, children, elders, and other non-combatants during conflict.

So far, there has been no official intervention from traditional leaders, religious scholars, or community mediators to stop the bloodshed, according to residents. Activists say the absence of a response has fueled fear and uncertainty in the town.

The Federal Government of Somalia has not publicly commented on the situation. Critics accuse authorities of focusing on political issues in the capital while civilians face targeted killings in the regions. Human rights advocates are calling for urgent action, warning that the attacks could escalate further if security forces are not deployed to restore order.

The death toll remains unclear, and independent verification of casualty figures has been difficult due to limited access to the area.

Background: Walla-Weyn and Recurrent Clan Tensions

Walla-Weyn, located in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, has long been an area affected by inter-clan competition over land, farming territory, and political control. The fertile agricultural lands around Walla-Weyn and Afgooye make the district strategically important, attracting both local militias and armed groups seeking influence.

Historically, clashes in the area have involved rival sub-clans fighting over farmland, river access, taxation rights, and security positions. These tensions often resurface during periods of weak government presence or when new local administrations are appointed. Lower Shabelle has also seen fighting linked to Al-Shabaab and government security forces, complicating conflict dynamics and making reconciliation harder.

Although elders and religious leaders have previously mediated temporary ceasefires, many peace agreements collapse due to lack of enforcement, distrust, or competition over resources. As a result, cycles of revenge attacks and displacement continue to reappear.

The shocking incidents reported this week are part of this wider pattern of instability, but residents and analysts note that the level of brutality and targeting of civilians marks a dangerous escalation compared to earlier disputes.
