Kismayo (Hornpost) The Presidency of Somalia has issued a statement regarding President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Kismayo, the capital of the Jubaland regional administration — a relationship that has long been strained and marked by limited cooperation. Notably, the statement made no mention of the Jubaland President who received the delegation, reflecting that President Hassan Sheikh’s administration has yet to officially recognize the re-election of Jubaland’s leader, Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe).
However, the Villa Somalia statement highlighted the visit as part of ongoing national unity and consultation efforts, stating:
“The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived today in Kismayo, the temporary capital of the Jubaland State.
During his stay, the President will continue consultations related to the state-building process in the country.
The President’s trip is part of the continuous efforts by the Federal Government and the President himself to strengthen national unity, enhance understanding, and align visions for Somalia’s future.”
On the other hand, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam issued a brief statement on his official Facebook page, in which he refrained from formally acknowledging Hassan Sheikh as the President of Somalia. Instead, he wrote:
“Today in the city of Kismayo, we welcomed my brother Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the delegation he is leading.
The Jubaland government always keeps its doors open for dialogue and for realizing the aspirations of the Somali people.”
Although the statements from both sides indicate that political tensions remain unresolved, sources confirm that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) are holding talks in Kismayo focusing on key political differences — including constitutional amendments and the framework for Somalia’s upcoming presidential elections.
