President Irro Halts Xeer Ciise Book Event, says “Nothing Is Worth More Than Our People’s Lives”

Hargeisa, Somaliland (Hornpost) President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro has announced the suspension of the Xeer Ciise book launch, following the violent unrest that broke out in Borama. Speaking to the nation, the President said the government’s priority is protecting lives and preserving stability across Somaliland.

Addressing the people of Awdal and Salal regions, President Irro emphasized his readiness to take any step necessary to prevent further bloodshed.

“As President, I am prepared to do whatever it takes if my people’s lives are at risk. I stand ready to support anything that promotes unity, dialogue, and the national interest of Somaliland,” he said.

The President confirmed that the government had officially halted the event planned to take place in Saylac.

“Today, I have suspended the Xeer Ciise ceremony in consideration of the public interest and the sentiments of our people. We are paying close attention to anything that affects community harmony and social cohesion,” he stated.

President Irro instructed security forces to reinforce stability and urged the public to remain calm and restrained.

“Security forces must safeguard peace. I ask citizens to control their emotions — nothing is more important to me today than the lives of my people,” he added.

He also welcomed the intervention of Somaliland’s traditional leaders who traveled to Borama to help ease tensions between local communities.

“I fully support the mediation initiative undertaken by our respected elders. Let us join hands and resolve anything that has gone wrong,” he said.

The unrest in Borama came after sections of the community opposed the previously approved Xeer Ciise book launch, leading to protests and clashes before the government stepped in to suspend the event.
