Aden, Yemen – (Horn post) Tens of thousands of supporters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) flooded the streets of Aden on Saturday, demonstrating their backing for the council and renewed calls for autonomy in southern Yemen.
Protesters carried flags of the former South Yemen state and banners endorsing STC leadership, chanting slogans demanding political recognition and an end to interference from the central government in Sana’a. The demonstrations were concentrated around key districts, including Khor Maksar, near Aden’s main airport, a strategic hub in the city.
The rallies come amid rising political tensions, with STC supporters voicing dissatisfaction over perceived attempts to curb the council’s influence in southern provinces. Observers note that the mobilization reflects the ongoing divisions in Yemen, where competing authorities and regional powers continue to vie for control.
Security forces were present but largely maintained a hands-off approach, allowing the crowd to march peacefully through major thoroughfares. Organizers described the turnout as a “historic expression” of southern Yemeni unity and determination to safeguard their political aspirations.
Analysts warn that such large-scale demonstrations underscore the fragile political environment in southern Yemen, highlighting the STC’s growing popularity and the persistent challenges facing the central government.
