Hargeisa (Hornpost) Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has called on President Isaac Herzog to approve Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request for a presidential pardon. Katz argued that the charges facing Netanyahu were “politically motivated” and had deepened divisions within Israeli society. He said the current regional security crisis requires unified national leadership focused on Israel’s strategic challenges.
According to Katz, granting Netanyahu a pardon—an idea also encouraged by former U.S. President Donald Trump—is the “only path” to ending decades-long societal polarization and restoring national unity. He emphasized that Netanyahu has repeatedly earned public trust through elections and should be allowed to continue leading the country during this critical period.
Finance Minister Joins the Call for a Pardon:
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also voiced support for pardon, insisting that his party will continue pushing for judicial reforms. Smotrich accused Israel’s judiciary of “politically targeting Netanyahu” and urged President Herzog to approve the request.
Netanyahu Facing Ongoing Corruption Charges:
Netanyahu is currently standing trial on multiple corruption charges. Reports indicate that former U.S. President Donald Trump personally appealed to President Herzog, urging him to pardon Netanyahu and prevent the cases from proceeding in court.
