HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The chairman of the WADDANI opposition party, Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, has welcomed a new cooperation agreement between the party and the General Federation of Somaliland Trade Unions, marking a notable step in political-labor relations.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Hirsi said the partnership reflects a globally recognized model in which labor unions and political parties collaborate, though he noted such arrangements are relatively new in Somaliland.
“This may be new to us, but globally it is common for labor unions and political parties to work together and form partnerships,” he said.
The agreement, described as a preliminary memorandum of understanding, follows what Hirsi called a prolonged effort by labor organizations to secure formal recognition, defend workers’ rights, and strengthen institutional capacity.
He said WADDANI aims to position itself as a key political ally for Somaliland’s workforce, pledging support for workers’ interests and greater engagement on labor issues.
“We are offering all workers in Somaliland a platform for partnership, where we stand as the party that supports and works alongside them,” Hirsi added.
The WADDANI leader emphasized that strengthening labor unions has long been part of the party’s political agenda, including commitments outlined in its election platform.
He also framed the agreement as a shift in political attitudes toward labor groups, noting that unions, once viewed with skepticism, are now being embraced as partners in national development.
The agreement signals a broader effort to integrate labor voices into Somaliland’s political landscape as the country continues to develop its democratic institutions.
