Kenyan President Inspects Banisa Water Supply Upgrade Project in Mandera County.

MANDERA, Kenya (Horn post) The President of the Republic of Kenya HE William Samoei Ruto on Saturday inspected the ongoing upgrade of the Banisa Water Supply Project in Mandera County, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving access to clean and reliable water in arid and semi-arid regions.

The project, located in Banisa, is part of a broader national strategy aimed at addressing chronic water shortages in northern Kenya, where communities have long struggled with limited access to safe drinking water due to recurring droughts and underdeveloped infrastructure.

During the inspection, Ruto said the upgraded system is expected to significantly boost water supply capacity, benefiting thousands of residents and supporting local livelihoods, including pastoralism and small-scale agriculture.

Officials indicated that the project includes expansion of water storage facilities, rehabilitation of existing pipelines, and installation of modern distribution systems to ensure efficient and sustainable delivery.

The president emphasized that investing in water infrastructure is critical for improving public health, enhancing food security, and driving economic development in marginalized regions.

Local leaders welcomed the initiative, noting that reliable water access would reduce the burden on residents—particularly women and children—who often travel long distances in search of water.

The Banisa project is among several development initiatives being rolled out by the Kenyan government to strengthen resilience against climate change and promote equitable development across all counties.
