
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanks Türkiye for support in state-building, as leaders welcome progress in Somalia’s energy exploration.
ISTANBUL (Horn post) Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Dolmabahçe Presidential Office in Istanbul on Wednesday, where the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations across security, economic development, and strategic cooperation.
According to a statement from the Somalian presidency, the talks focused on expanding long-standing ties between the two countries, with both leaders reviewing progress in investment cooperation and development partnerships.
President Mohamud expressed appreciation to the government and people of the Turkey for their continued role in Somalia’s state-building efforts, particularly in infrastructure development, public services, and security assistance.
The two presidents also emphasized the importance of deepening strategic cooperation, welcoming recent developments in Somalia’s energy sector, including the arrival of a drilling vessel expected to begin offshore exploration activities.
Türkiye’s presidency issued a brief statement confirming the meeting, noting: “President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia at the Dolmabahçe Presidential Office in Istanbul.”
Somalia and Turkey maintain a close partnership, with Ankara operating one of its largest overseas military training facilities in Mogadishu and playing a significant role in Somalia’s security and institutional development.
The meeting comes as Somalia accelerates efforts to attract foreign investment in oil and gas exploration while continuing to rely heavily on international security partnerships.
